Week 4 - Reflection and Poster Grid

The first weeks of studio were pretty basic in comparison to the recent weeks. This shows that the assignment is becoming more challenging as we have to dedicate more time to ‘perfect’ our outcomes for Assignment 1. The folding from week 1 were inspired by Herzog de Meuron, I found his architecture to be the most appealing as he makes intriguing architecture from simple designs, such as basic extrusions which creates as edgy appearance to his architecture.
The Spore Creature Creator© was an interesting program to use as it allowed us to utilize our creativity by thinking ‘outside the box’ of how this program is meant to be used (so rather than creating normal creatures with legs and arms etc. I tried experimenting with inanimate objects such as lamps (inspired by http://www.bonluxat.com/a/Herzog_and_De_Meuron_Pipe_Ceiling_Lamp.html), a clothes line and a random ‘flower monster’.
We were taught to pay close attention to detail for the outputs of week 2 where we rendered almost exact replicas of our folding. Our ‘clients’ for our prospective environment were created also using Spore©.  Inspiration was drawn from our architect’s works, our folding and our creatures. The almost triangular form of my first creature inspired by Herzog’s ‘Le Project Triangle’ and its multiple limbs were inspired by my folding.
The rigid posture of my second creature and it’s colour is inspired by Herzog’s 'Jinhua Architecture Park’.  The third creature is mainly inspired by Rebekah’s folding from week one.
The first environment for creature 1 is inspired by the environment of household spiders who live in dark and damp places – I have designed an abandoned room as it’s environment and it’s web beneath the table and in the box is it’s ‘home’ – spiders don’t usually stay in one area for too long hence the creation of 2 habitats.
The second environment is inspired by the 'Jinhua Architecture Park’, inspiration was mainly drawn from some of the outstanding works of Herzog.
Final Draft of both Posters

Grid Layout of each Poster

Herzog de Meuron's Poster
This graphic work is successful does to it's simple yet complex grid layout. The traditional use of just 3 colours in various shades (black, white and blue) works well as the black and blue background contrasts the white text. The layout of the three images 'boxing in' the text  highlights the importance of the text. The viewer's eyes are drawn from top to bottom - from the title to the details at the bottom. The center-alignment of the images and text allows for this to happen. The brightness of the mosaic background also allows the viewer's eyes to focus in on the center of the poster as it is brighter towards the center. Four font sizes and two font types are used on the poster, this helps to portray the important of the various information given on the poster. The title in the center has the largest font size, the names of the architects comes 2nd in size, then the awards followed by the details located at the bottom of the poster.
